Interlaken explained

In a nutshell

Interlaken sits on a narrow strip of land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, which is exactly where the name comes from. The Höhematte, a wide green meadow in the middle of town, was deliberately never built on so the view of the Jungfrau stays open. Most visitors use the town as a base rather than a destination, because the Lauterbrunnen valley, Grindelwald and the Jungfraujoch are all short rides away. The two lakes have completely different colours, one deep blue and one turquoise, and boats run on both. If you came to Switzerland for mountains, this is the valley floor everything else branches off from.
